How to Press Autumn Leaves

For many years I have had a fascination with pressed leaves and ferns.  When autumn rolls around I begin to snag colored leaves to press.  Reds, oranges and yellows are all attractive and if done right can last for many years to come.  Here is the technique that I use to press my leaves.Fall Leaves

How to Press Autumn Leaves:

  1. Gather your favorite fall leaves while they are still bright and soft.  Make sure to dry them if they are damp.
  2. Place between 2 pieces of paper.  It can be newspaper, paper towels, craft paper or book pages.  If using a book do not use a good one as the moisture can damage the pages.   I use something like an old phone book.
  3. Place a heavy weight on your stacked leaves and allow to dry naturally for a few weeks.
  4. Use your leaves to create autumn inspired crafts.  Here are some ideas to get you started.

Craft Ideas for Your Leaves:

  • Name place holders for your autumn and Thanksgiving celebrations.  Use a silver or gold pen to write names on the leaves and set on plates.
  • Leaf garland.  Hot glue your leaves to twine and use around doors and windows.
  • Frame your leaves into a grouping.
  • Create an Autumn leaf wreath.
  • Make a leaf bouquet.
  • Wrap candles with leaves and tie twine on top.
  • Decorate mini-journals with the leaves.
  • Place a single beautiful leaf under a dome or cloche.
