Summer Garden Reset

By now your garden is in full swing. Flowers are bursting with blooms. Produce is ripening and the herbs are growing like crazy. This is the garden at its best. But each year I notice something. Once we hit the end of July, we often think we’re done. That all we need to do is harvest and maintain what we have.

I don’t know about you, but as I look around my garden, I’m seeing the residue of the early garden planting. Little messy, disorganized areas. There’s a bed or two that have become overgrown with weeds. And I see lots of flowers that need some TLC.

I’m also finding toys left out after my grandkids visited for the 4th of July. I actually have some piles of leftover trays and pots from early spring, stacked but not put away. My porch needs a quick refresh, and my garden shed has become a dumping ground. Again. There might also be an unfinished project or two.

Have you noticed any of these problems in your garden as well? Spring is such a busy time. There’s so much to do to get the garden cleared, ready, and planted for the season. By the time we get to July, we’re tired. But July and August are actually the perfect time for a Summer Garden Reset. Time to finish up any undone projects, clean up the little messes, and get the garden in tip-top shape.

A summer garden reset is not meant to be a major project or undertaking. It’s meant to put things in order. Clean up the mess. And spruce up the garden so you can enjoy the last days of the growing season without the constant problems glaring at you. We still have lots of summer left, and I don’t want to see the piles of trays and containers every time I use my potting bench.

5 Summer Garden Reset Ideas…

Here are five easy ways to reset your garden so you can enjoy the rest of the growing season.

#1… Clean Up Any Messes Left Over From Spring Planting

• Clean and store seedling trays and containers.

• Find and organize the tools that are turning up all over the garden.

• Inventory and organize your seeds and seed packets.

• Put away any spring planting supplies.

#2… Refresh Your Garden Beds

Spring blooms are finished, and the warm-season crops are flourishing. Consider these tasks:

• Remove any spent spring flowers to make room for the heat-loving plants to grow.

• Replace spent blooms in your containers with late-season flowers.

• Deadhead any plants that keep blooming all summer, such as calendula, cosmos, and zinnias.

• Add another layer of compost or mulch if needed to your garden beds.

• Pull any weeds you see while they’re still small.

#3… Finish Up On Any Small Projects

Now is the perfect time to complete any unfinished projects.

• Update your seating areas.

• Refresh your summer porch.

• Clean up your garden shed.

• Organize your potting bench.

• Provide support for taller garden plants if you haven’t already done so.

#4… Get Your Weeds Under Control

• Add some new decor to your porch. A patriotic theme, outdoor games such as a croquet set, a new garden sign, or greenery and flowers can add to the fresh feel of summer.
