How to Make a Pom Pom Garland

Generally, after the holidays, I decorate my home with winter decor. Right about mid-February I start thinking about switching out my snowmen, mitten garland and winter candles for spring decor. But since we are still being pounded with snow, I’m just not ready to pull out my spring branches, bird nests, and eggs. So instead I decided to push the winter decor and make a pom pom garland.

A pom pom garland still has the feel of winter but it can also be used to decorate for other seasons as well. There are a variety of ways to make pom poms, but I find a Pom Pom Maker is the easiest tool for the job. I have tried the homemade version using my hands, but the pom poms just don’t turn out as even as I like. You can pick up a Pom Pom Maker at any craft store or on Amazon.

A few years ago, I purchased a set with a small, medium and large maker so I have a variety of options. For this garland, I am using the largest pom pom maker. I also like to use a thicker yarn for my pom pom’s. A skein of yarn can make enough pom poms to make multiple garlands or even a pom pom wreath.

How to Make a Pom Pom Garland…

Step 1: Gather your supplies

Decide what colors of yarn you want for your garland. I am using white, steel blue, and gray but you might want a single color or even a more colorful garland. Also, decide how long you want your garland to be. I am draping mine over a chicken wire window which is about three-foot wide plus extra for draping. So for me, a seven-foot garland will work best. You can space the pom poms any distance apart, but I find 4 inches to be a good spacing. I used seventeen pom poms for the length of my chain.

Step 2: Make your pom poms

Follow the directions on the pom pom maker to complete the number of pom poms needed. It takes about 7-8 minutes to make a completed pom pom once you get the hang of it. I will usually make them while watching TV with my husband since they don’t take concentrated focus to make. Step 3: Make a yarn chain

I used the same yarn to make a braided chain about 7 feet long. To do this cut 3 pieces of your yarn about eighteen inches longer than your needed length. Hold the three pieces together and tie off about three inches from the end. Clamp the end into a drawer and then begin to braid the three strings together. It helps if you bundle the ends of your yarn as you braid. Periodically, you might need to move a completed section of your chain into the drawer to have easier access. Once you reach the end, tie it off like the other side and leave three inches unbraided

Since I was using three colors of yarn I made my chain to match. If you would like a solid look you could use just one of the colors to make your braided chain.

Step 4: Tie your pom poms to the chain

Starting about an inch from one end of the knot, begin to tie your pom poms to the chain every four inches. Continue to tie on the pom poms until you are about an inch from the knot on the opposite end. After you have double-checked the position of the pom poms, you can trim your tie-off string. Now your garland is ready to hang.
